Compare Dreaming and Waking Life Reactions in Relationship Experiences

Review one or more of your dreams about one or more person in your life after reading the following blog. Comments on your experiences?

The systems approach to interpreting dreams [SAID] is a new dreamwork concept. With a systems approach to interpreting dreams [SAID], instead of having the family or group together as would typically happen in a counseling session, the individual gathers and studies (either alone or with a counselor) dreams about major relationships in his or her life, primarily related to the family.

Reactions to others based on earlier experiences -- the systems effect -- can be very difficult to recognize in our waking lives, especially since most of us have established our patterns over years, often since early childhood. The good news is that once you begin to recognize negative patterns, you can immediately begin to change the dynamic.

One person’s reactions do affect how others react. That means you don’t have to change everyone around you (nor can you). But you can change your own thoughts, emotions and actions, and these will absolutely change your relationships with others.

(The above paragraphs are excerpts from Living Dreams, Living, Life, 2007, pp. 56 and 57.)

[PMID Step 6: With whom is your primary relationship in this dream? Compare your dreaming and waking life reactions to each person in this dream. In addition, note any influences from the past indicated in this dream.]

No Blaming: The Personalized Method for Interpreting Dreams (PMID) is not about blaming others. It is about discovering whether the dreamer’s reactions in earlier experiences are deterrents to (or encouragements to) his or her healthy reactions in current relationship experiences. If deterrents, the dreamer takes responsibility for changing her or his thoughts, attitudes (emotions) and behavior (actions) to alleviate the stress she or he feels. Blaming another, regardless of who might have influenced the dreamer’s earlier stressful reactions, will only delay the dreamer’s ability to change unhelpful reactions in current relationship experiences.
